Unlike many suburbs in the Houston area, Spring Valley has not been gobbled up by its large neighbor to the east. As a result of its incorporation in 1955, Spring Valley was able to avoid the fate of many neighboring areas around Houston. Although surrounded by the city, Spring Valley has its own, independent government, and shares some essential services with other adjoining villages. In 2007, the name was changed officially, and it is now known as Spring Valley Village.
The city of Spring Valley is small, roughly 1.3 square miles. With a population of 3,700, the city is almost exclusively devoted to single-family residences. Almost half the residents of Spring Valley have children under 18 years old in their household. It is served by the Spring Branch Independent School District, and residents attend Bear Boulevard School in Spring Valley, Valley Oaks Elementary School (Houston), and Spring Branch Middle School and Memorial High School in Hedwig Village. The town is home to City Hall Park and the Robert A. Vines Environmental Science Center. The Science Center contains a number of exhibition halls, a natural history gallery and an arboretum covering five acres.
